Review of the Environmental Impact Assessment and Social Impact Assessment for The Bangladesh Power System Enhancement and Efficiency Improvement project in Sonagazi and Gangachara areas, for AFD – Bangladesh

Mission:
As part of the Government of Bangladesh’s commitment to increasing access to energy through the development of renewable energy generation, appropriate measures to generate environmentally friendly electricity from renewable energy sources have been taken, and projects for the construction of renewable energy generation sites have been developed. A loan has been granted to the Ministry of Energy for this purpose. Within the framework of this financing, the AFD Group asked the Energy Division to carry out an updated environmental and social impact assessment for two solar projects (Sonagazi and Gangachara).
AFD commissioned Insuco to conduct a compliance review of the ESIA.
The mission consisted of reviewing the Environmental Impact Assessment report and the Social Impact Assessment report to identify compliance deviations from the national legal framework and the World Bank’s environmental and social standards. The expert then made recommendations to AFD to address these gaps.
The review was conducted remotely.
