Due diligence on the social aspects of a mining project

Mission:
Hatch was appointed by an important mining company to assume the Lenders’ Technical Adviser (LTA) and Independent Lenders’ Environmental and Social Consultant (IESC) roles, which includes performing a due diligence regarding the construction and operation phases of a large-scale mining project. Insuco was requested in this context to conduct the social components of the study.
Results:
Insuco implemented the following activities:
- Review of ESIA Report and community-related documents
- Review of stakeholder engagement records and activities that cover communities: analysis of (i) community concerns and perceptions towards the project, and (ii) community expectations of compensation for resettlement, local employment, etc.
- Analysis of community history and drivers of security conflict, land-related conflict, ethnic or other types of tensions between different groups of people
- Site visit and interviews with key stakeholders
The client received a documentation review report, a site visit report, as well as an analysis of the main social risks associated with the mining project.
