Cultural heritage and archaeological management plan for AMC mining project

Client : Alliance Mining Commodities (AMC)

Region / Country: Africa | Guinea
Sectors: Mining

Mission:

AMC is a private company specialised in exploration and extraction activities for the bauxite industry. According to a mining convention signed by the Government of Guinea, AMC is planning to operate a concession in Gaoual region, in “Moyenne Guinée”.

A logistic corridor combining land transport (a road of about 110 km) and fluvial transport will be developed to transport the bauxite from Koumbia to the coast of Kamsar, a port located on Rio Nuñez river.
The project footprint covers an area of about 1 350 hectares and will require the relocation of cultural heritage sites before beginning the construction phase, in order to avoid their destruction. Archaeological sites could also be located in the area and it is therefore necessary identifying them before launching the construction phase of the project.

The mission thus consisted in identifying the persons in charge of the cultural heritage sites, cultural heritage that is both tangible and intangible, as well as in studying the processes that should be conducted if relocating these sites appears necessary. The mission also consisted in carrying out a preventive research of artefacts and in identifying major archaeological sites.

Results:

The following products were provided to the client:

  • Cultural Heritage and Archaeological Management Plan (CHAMP), that includes a map of the impacted sites
  • Geolocalised database that includes all the cultural heritage sites and their characteristics
  • A procedure to apply in case of archaeological fortuitous discovery
