Completion of an environmental and social audit for the geothermal exploration project in the Lac Assal region of Djibouti

Sep 2022 | News from Insuco

The Insuco Djibouti team recently carried out an Environmental and Social Audit of a geothermal exploration project in the Lac Assal region of EDD (Electricité de Djibouti). This project, financed by the African Development Bank, aims to improve the quality of life of the population by increasing Djibouti’s clean energy production capacity.

The country is indeed located at the meeting point of three rifts – those of the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden and the East African Rift -, at the end of three tectonic plates. This makes Djibouti a volcanic land, where the molten rocks are close to the ground, full of chimneys, fumaroles, geysers and hot springs.

During the field visits, Insuco Djibouti verified the quality and conformity of the Project at the environmental, social and health level. The team met with institutional and community stakeholders. Through this project, women have been able to benefit from new structures enabling them to carry out certain traditional craft activities.
