Update of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA), Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) and Climate Vulnerability Analysis for the wastewater treatment and disposal project

Mission:
Insuco’s role included the development of the socio-environmental component for the wastewater treatment and disposal project in the city of Manta, Ecuador. This project is financed by the French Development Agency (AFD) and executed by Seureca Veolia, which has contracted Insuco to carry out the technical studies related to the social and environmental aspects of the project. The objective focused on updating the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) and the Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP), in accordance with the World Bank’s Environmental and Social Standards and the specific requirements of the financing entity. In addition, the project’s climate vulnerability analysis was carried out. The study incorporated the three technical components of the wastewater treatment and disposal system: i) the wastewater channeling system; ii) the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP); and iii) the submarine outfall.
Results:
The project emphasized participatory engagement, ensuring that local property concerns and community perspectives were incorporated into the assessment, thereby enhancing legitimacy and ownership of the results. By combining scientific rigor with social sensitivity, the team delivered not only compliance with international standards but also actionable insights that will help safeguard the city’s coastal ecosystem and communities against climate risks in the long term.
