Strengthening Women Leadership to Drive a More Sustainable Mining Sector in Ecuador

Nov 2025 | News from Insuco

Insuco Ecuador, in a consortium with Universidad UTE, has officially launched the “Training Programme to Strengthen and Promote the Positioning of Women as Leaders in the Ecuadorian Mining Sector”. This initiative is a crucial step towards transforming the sector into a more sustainable and equitable industry.

Driving female leadership in mining is not merely an equity goal; it is an essential condition for achieving a more just and sustainable future for the sector. Statistics from the World Bank show that women represent only about 15% of the global mining workforce, with even lower representation in leadership positions.

The programme is a result of a joint effort between Insuco, the Ministry of Environment and Energy (MAE), and Universidad UTE, with funding from the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB). Its core objective is to bolster the leadership capacities of 120 women working in the public mining sector in Ecuador.

Over six months, participants will complete 230 hours of training across key modules:

  • Society, Culture, and Gender
  • Mining Processes
  • Management of Mining Processes, with an emphasis on the Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) approach, multi-stakeholder dialogue, and territorial corporate responsibility
  • Leadership and Public Management, focusing on political communication, crisis communication, and leadership.
