Realization of a study for the Wild Chimpanzee Foundation (WCF) to identify measures and conditions for the sustainable management of the villages located in the Integrally Protected Zone (IPZ) of the Middle Bafing National Park (MBNP)

Client : Wild Chimpanzee Foundation (WCF)

Mission:

WCF, an environmental conservation NGO, has been mandated by the Guinean government to support the Guinean Office of Parks and Reserves in the creation of the Middle Bafing National Park and to accompany the local populations living there. This park will be divided into three distinct protection zones, where specific rules for the management of natural resources will be put in place: a Development Zone, a Resource Management Zone and an Integrally Protected Zone (IPZ).

The objective of the study is to understand how the village located in IPZs earn their income and livelihood from the exploitation of their environment and thus to propose less impactful alternatives. Data collection from the study localities was carried out by WCF, Insuco was in charge of preparing data collection tools, training WCF’s teams and analyzing the collected data.

Results:

The following deliverables were provided to the client:

  • A training material ;
  • A report including:
    • A socio-economic and cultural profile of the localities
    • A typology of the agricultural activities carried out in the localities
    • A geolocation of agricultural activities for each of the localities and these data are recorded in a GIS.
    • Accompanying measures for the sustainable management of the resources identified in collaboration with the communities
    • An overall strategic plan
