Client : FAO

Mission:

The project entitled “Strengthening the Productivity of Crop and Livestock Productions in Djibouti” (Re.Pro.Va), funded by the FAO, is a project that aims to support the communities of pastoralists and agro-pastoralists in the five regions located in the interior of the country.

As part of this project, Insuco was mandated to obtain an in-depth understanding of the field, that will increase knowledge about beneficiaries and sites, in order to be able to establish appropriate strategies to implement the activities of Re.Pro.Va project. To do so, it was decided to combine an anthropological approach, in order to understand historical and customary perspectives, and a socio-economic approach, in order to analyse current economic and technical constraints and realities.

Results:

Insuco provided the following deliverables:

  • In-depth case studies regarding different sites that were identified with the client
  • An analysis grid, based on these case studies
  • A census of agricultural populations and other populations potentially interested in agro-livestock activities
  • A baseline to characterise the target populations in the proposed sites, as well as their relationship to agro-livestock activities
  • An inventory of agricultural infrastructure and irrigated perimeters in the different sites
  • An analysis of watersheds and soils for 10 sites
  • Pre-projects budgeted for the development of hydraulic structures for 5 sites
  • Recommendations for the different sites, in order to contribute to the roadmaps of each site regarding the best strategy to implement Re.Pro.Va activities
