Implementation of a socio-economic baseline study for the Buriticá mining project
Client : Continental Gold
Buriticá extractive project, operated by Continental Gold, is considered as the largest gold extractive project in the country, as it is estimated that it will double gold production at national level. The challenges presented by natural resource exploitation, as well as the project specific context, require that the operation of this extractive site respect the highest operational, environmental and social standards, at both national and international level. Insuco was mandated to generate a comprehensive socio-economic baseline, based on the analysis of social challenges presented by the construction and operation of this project.
Insuco delivered to the client a comprehensive socio-economic baseline, in line with IFC international standards and national competent institutions. This required in particular:
- To review reference material at international, national and local levels, in order to define relevant indicators to assess over time the socio-economic impacts of the project on its area of influence, in particular on vulnerable populations
- To build a digital questionnaire (more than 160 questions), in collaboration with the client teams, test it, and train the surveyors recruited in the project area regarding its implementation, which also strengthened local capacities
- To collect data over more than 700 households, these data being integrated simultaneously within the software Boréalis, specialised in social information management
- To analyse and organise the information within a synthetic report, which includes in particular recommendations to support the client in decision-making processes and in the implementation of its social management strategy, as well as its follow-up and evaluation, for the whole project life cycle
