Design and Pilot Implementation of a Socio-Ecological Methodology for Monitoring, Ecological Restoration, and Invasive Species Replacement in Bogotá’s Eastern Hills

Client: French Development Agency - AFD

Mission:

INSUCO was engaged to design and validate an integrated socio-ecological methodology that would enable Agence Française de Développement (AFD) and key public stakeholders to monitor ecological restoration, guide the progressive replacement of invasive exotic species, and reduce wildfire risks in Bogotá’s Eastern Hills. The client expected a practical, evidence-based framework that could be adopted by multiple institutions and replicated across larger restoration areas. Our multidisciplinary team included a social expert, environmental education specialist, legal expert, and GIS specialist, working alongside technical counterparts from Secretaría Distrital de Ambiente, CAR Cundinamarca, Empresa de Acueducto y Alcantarillado de Bogotá, Jardín Botánico de Bogotá, and local communities.

Results:

Key deliverables included: a territorial baseline assessment; stakeholder mapping; an international benchmarking study on restoration monitoring practices; a socio-ecological monitoring methodology combining field sampling, remote sensing, and participatory tools; strategies for invasive species replacement and wildfire prevention; social risk management and participation mechanisms; institutional capacity-building modules; and a pilot implementation plan.
