Recent and ongoing projects

Mission:

In 2018, the Somaliland Development Fund (SDF) launched its second implementation phase (SDF II), aimed at supporting the Government of Somaliland in the delivery of infrastructure to stimulate economic development.

Under SDF II, Insuco was engaged by the client in 2019 to carry out environmental and social scoping reports as part of the development phase of three projects.

When these projects entered their implementation phase, the SDF requested Insuco to evaluate the Environmental and Social Impact Assessments (ESIAs) in order to monitor and mitigate newly emerging potential impacts.

The objectives of this assignment are therefore as follows:

• To identify the negative environmental and social impacts associated with the three projects and prepare an evaluation document.

• To develop an Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) and a monitoring checklist to be used during project implementation, in order to manage potential negative impacts.

Results:

The assignment consisted of carrying out the following tasks:

• Review of relevant documentation

• Identification of stakeholders and affected populations

• Stakeholder consultations to establish the environmental and social baseline conditions

• Identification of socio-environmental resources within the project area

• Collection of data on the physical and biological environment

• Targeted socio-economic survey

• Public consultations

• Identification of potential and anticipated environmental and social impacts

• Identification of mitigation measures

• Development of a monitoring mechanism and the definition of indicators and tools for monitoring, auditing, evaluation and supervision of both negative and positive impacts

Insuco delivered the following outputs:

• An ESIA evaluation report

• An Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP) and an Environmental and Social Monitoring Plan checklist
