Client : Environmental Resources Management (ERM) on behalf of Winning Consortium Simandou (WCS)

Region / Country: Africa | Guinea

Mission:

In November 2019, the SMB-Winning consortium won the tender for Simandou Blocks 1 and 2 (Simandou North). The Simandou Iron Ore Project led by the WCS consortium is a global mining project including the construction of a “trans-Guinean” railway of approximately 675 km to link the mine to the Guinean coast.

Insuco carried out the social studies, in support of the ERM office in charge of carrying out the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) of the rail component of the project. Insuco developed a Stakeholder Engagement Plan (SEP) to identify all the stakeholders involved and a Social Baseline Study (SBS) to understand the socio-economic situation of the area and the main issues at stake. In addition, a study on the cultural heritage of the area, as well as an archaeological study, were also carried out.

Results:

Insuco has submitted:

  • A Stakeholder Engagement Plan;
  • A Social Baseline Study;
  • A Cultural Heritage Report;
  • An archaeological survey.
