Social Impact Assessment for the Kon Kweni Iron Ore Project led by Société des Mines de Fer de Guinée (SMFG) – Guinea

Mission:
Insuco was commissioned to deliver the social component of the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) for the Kon Kweni iron ore project. To meet the high standards required for a project located close to Mount Nimba, Insuco mobilised specialised teams across five areas: social baseline, social impact assessment, Resettlement Policy Framework, cultural heritage and archaeology.
The assignment also involved stakeholder consultations in Conakry and in the project area, focusing on local authorities and communities living within or near the area concerned.
Results:
The assignment provided a comprehensive assessment of the project’s social issues and the key tools required to manage them as part of the ESIA.
- Delivery of the Social Impact Assessment, combining the social baseline and social impact assessment.
- Development of a Cultural Heritage Management Plan and a Resettlement Policy Framework.
- Identification of key socio-economic issues and social impacts, in a context of high expectations among local communities.
- Development of recommendations for impact management, particularly in relation to expectations around employment and improved living conditions.
Extra Mile
Insuco tailored its stakeholder engagement process to a context shaped by fifteen years of successive studies and extensive consultation of local communities. This approach made it possible to address high community expectations regarding employment and services while providing information suited to the project context. Insuco also mobilised its cultural heritage and archaeological expertise to deliver specialised studies in a region of particularly rich cultural heritage.
